Jader Almeida's pieces make themselves known in layers. Each may be savored slowly. Taken as a pure form, a project in search of beauty, its design is remarkable, with thin fluid lines, soft curves, bowed intersections, a delicate balance at the very brink of physics and repeating geometrical themes. If you approach the finished piece, you see the effect it produces in the surrounding space, the harmony between the components, the color chart, the elegant combination of materials. Coming closer, the thing that most astounds is its soothing invitation to the touch of the hands and body, the generosity of its lines imparts comfort. Coming even closer, you will witness the ingenuity of the finishing touches.
Perfectly constructed details in an equation so challenging that the density of each component supports the utmost possible weight to maintain its slender form, preserving the utmost possible lightness. "I create pieces, not to play a main role in the space, but to play supporting roles. My design is the fruit of extreme labor of projected simplification and, at the same time, from the point of view of production, my pieces are very detailed".
The first steps toward Álvaro Siza’s genius started very early when, at the age of 16, he began his major in Architecture at the Escola Superior de Belas Artes do Porto (ESBAP), in Portugal, an institution he attended for six years. In 1954, one year before his graduation, he had built his first work.
At ESBAP, Álvaro Siza worked alongside the architect Fernando Távora, his professor at the time and one of the most influential professionals in his area. Future architects who also attended the institution, between 1966 and 1969, had the chance to witness Siza’s quality when he began teaching. In 1976, his passion for the classroom brought him back to the Escola Superior de Belas Artes do Porto.
The satisfaction of sharing his knowledge motivated the professor and architect to cross over his own borders by teaching in countries such as the United States and Colombia. He is, in fact, an honorary professor at the Southeast University China and the China Academy of Art, as well as an honorary partner in the Academia de Escolas de Arquitectura e Urbanismo de Língua Portuguesa.
